The Spiritual Power of Sex

In Tarot, the Major Arcana is a successive system of archetypal energies that are universally part of the human experience- beginning with the Fool and ending with the World/ Universe. Tarot is the story of us, a memetic tool telling the tale of our development based on the many historically acclaimed cultures, societies, and systems of wisdom found world-wide, and, in some cases, universally.

This world wide influence can be illustrated by the wisdom of ancient Egypt and the goddess Seshat, who is touted as the great scribe. Seshat is the goddess of astrology, and applying the wisdom of the stars, and, therefore, the Universe at large, to human guidance and understanding. We see her influence in the High Priestess (the knower of divine secrets, and a connection to the Universe) and the Stars (astrology, messages from the divine, and hopeful directives). Seshat is said to have first been depicted with the symbol of the papyrus leaf above her head. Later, it transformed into the horned head piece also featured atop the High Priestesses crown found on many Tarot decks. She, alas, is one of many of the great archetypal representations of these cards that tell the stories of our fortune here on Earth, a sort of Earth-school curriculum, if you will, based on cultures across the globe.

But, what, you ask, does this have to do with SEX?

Well... Tarot history lessons aside, one card that makes the greatest case for the spiritual power of sex is the Lovers. Being the number six card in the Major Arcana succession of archetypes, this card is informed by all the archetypal lessons found before it, including the Fool, the Magician/Alchemist, the High Priestess, the Empress, the Emperor, and the Hierophant. By the time we get to the Lovers, two complete entities of creative power (the Empress is the symbol for personal creative power) have come together through authority (Emperor) and spiritual education (Hierophant) to combine forces. The Empress is card three, and the Lovers is card six. Three plus three (complete creative power plus complete creative power) equals six, union of creative power through sex.

But not without discipline (Emperor) and spiritual education (Hierophant), which, as a side note, could as much be from an institution as it could be from a parade of books. Once two energies have united, the highest purpose they can serve is to multiply the power they have generated and cultivated within to create new life together.

New life can be as literal as a baby or as analogous as a business. Whatever the desired outcome, it is clear that the Lovers come together to serve a purpose, which is the fuel of the 'soul mate' fiery passion people often express when relating to this archetype. The power of the Lovers is best expressed through all the chakras, form the top down, and creates actual manifestation at the grounding point, the first chakra. This means sex.
