Toltec Wisdom: The Magic of Words

The Toltec Wisdom brought forth by Don Miguel Ruiz in The Four Agreements: A Toltec Wisdom Book is refreshing and enlightening. Ruiz reveals spiritual knowledge which has for too long been unconscious to the human experience. The Toltec teach that words are not just a means to communicate information, but intentions that can be used as spells to create events and manifest dreams. Consequently by misusing the “word” we have enslaved our fellow man and ourselves through gossip and agreements that make up the bars of our prison. The Toltec Path demonstrates that words can be used to evolve the human race into “active” magicians capable of dis-“spelling” limitation so that a symbolic “Heaven on Earth” can be realized.
“Through the word you express your creative power. It is through the word that you manifest everything. Regardless of what language you speak, your intent manifests through the word. What you dream, what you feel, and what you really are, will all be manifested through the word. (pg. 26, Ruiz)”
Along with a new found understanding of the magic of words also comes a realization that we use black magic in our daily lives. We cast spells on other people and ourselves through expressing limiting beliefs and stereotypical opinions. Similar to how russian dolls have concentric layers which have to be removed before the last doll can be realized. Humans also have these layers, but instead of dolls we have “agreements” with other peoples’ opinions.
“Every human is a magician, and we can either put a spell on someone with our word or we can release someone from a spell. We cast spells all the time with our opinions. An example: I see a friend and give him an opinion that just popped into my mind. I say, “Hmmm! I see that kind of color in your face in people who are going to get cancer.” If he listens to the word, and if he agrees, he will have cancer in less than one year. That is the power of the word.
During our domestication, our parents and siblings gave their opinions about us without even thinking. We believed in these opinions and we lived in fear over these opinions, like not being good at swimming, sports or writing. Someone gives an opinion and says, “Look, this girl is ugly!” The girl listens, believes she is ugly and grows up with the idea that she is ugly. That is the spell she is under.(pg. 28-29, Ruiz)”
Toltec teachings suggest that by making agreements with un-supportive people we become victim to black magic spells of limitation. These spells can easily be “ex-spelled” by supportive and encouraging people that can help us to create new agreements focused on potential and purpose. Interestingly enough, in order to write words we must “spell” them correctly, and if not we use the “spell check” on our computer. Even more intriguing is the observation that when a student is “disruptive” or not conforming in school they become “Ex-spelled”. Could this be telling us something about the education system which we think so highly of?
“Depending upon how it is used, the word can set you free, or it can enslave you more than you know. All magic you possess is based on your word. Your word is pure magic, and misuse of your word is black magic. (pg. 27, Ruiz)”
Gossiping is among the highest forms of black magic. Urban areas are fertile ground for psychic epidemics of all kinds. Our opinions and agreements with friends in public and private immensely influence this world for good and ill.
“Gossiping has become the main form of communication in human society. It has become the way we feel close to each other, because it makes us feel better to see someone feel as badly as we do. There is an old expression that says, “Misery likes company,” and people who are suffering in hell don’t want to be all alone. Fear and suffering are an important part of the dream of the planet; they are how the dream of the planet keeps us down. (pg. 39, Ruiz)”
The Toltec Wisdom unveils the magical existence we have unknowingly been living our entire life. The downside to this is that we have undoubtedly enslaved ourselves and our fellow man through the use of words. The collective hell that we have created by means of gossiping and judging others has enslaved humanity to a lower level of potential. The Toltec teachings are enlightening for some yet can be frightening when considering the possibility that the only way to change the world is to change agreements with our own “Self”. As Ruiz and the Toltec suggest we need to acknowledge the black magic in order to make new agreements based on human potential and purpose. The manifesting of a symbolic “Heaven on Earth” will follow after new individual and collective agreements facilitate the emergence of the “active” human magicians that we all are.

FractalBob nagged at me to
FractalBob nagged at me to read this book for years. Read it a few months back, loved it, and bought my own copy the other day. So it's neat you brought it up =)
It's *such* a small book, and it has totally changed my perspective to something much more fertile. So like FractalBob, I've been nagging at my loved ones to read it too.
The one thing that stood out to me the most is when he talks about self-abuse. He says that the abuse we inflict upon ourselves is the same amount of abuse we withstand from others. There is no imbalance there. Which explains why we tolerate unhealthy connections to such a grand extent sometimes.
But yeah anyways Kane, thanks for sharing this, I hope you get some people reading it. Awesome, awesome book. Speaking of which, there's a second one called the Fifth Agreement. I haven't read it yet, but if you have (or do), let me know how it went =)
fifth agreement...
i have yet to read it..but a dear friend of mine (my mama) says it's great- she's on her second read before i can borrow it :) four agreements changed much in my life when i first read it..and continue to change as i continue to practice..funny i read this today as we were just discussing him/those books yesterday...
great piece...
Thanks for bringing this topic up. To me its one of THE ancient struggles. Intent vs. Logos. before words how was communication achieved? Was it perceived as our words today are? Or was it more intuitive, the intention was stronger, the empathy of the intent. The phrase "All is Mind" relates to that changing of self. I've always said that with all this communication technology today, there is less and less meaningful communication going on. On the subject of words setting you free, I find the lack of words to be more empowering and reveal a truer freedom.
Nice blog ideas.
