Being Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable and Why the State of the Union Depends On It

Arianna Huffington's call for "Hope 2.0" in this recent article (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/arianna-huffington/hope-has-been-a-bust-it...) comes in the wake of her realization that "elected officials are not going to save us" and "that change is going to have to come from outside Washington."
(I wonder just how far outside Washington though, wink wink.)
She continues, "One year ago, Hope was about crossing our fingers and electing leaders that we thought would enact real change. Hope 2.0 is about using the lessons of Dr. King to create the conditions that give them no choice."
Well put. In a way, Google is already having this exact effect on the corporate world.
Let's recall why there are even such discussions going on as of late and why terms like 'revolution' and 'tea party' are continually being bandied about, not to mention the surge in so called populist anger.
Pluto is in Capricorn and it has a big job to do: to cleanse the toxicity that has infected our official institutions, as well as the consciousness that created it in the first place. Pluto entered Capricorn in November, 2008—the economy would collapse a month later, call it a coincidence if you would like. Now here's the clincher. The last time Pluto was in this sign, was ... wait for it, during the time of the American Revolution (November, 1762 to December, 1778 to be exact).
Isn't that amazing? There is no question that history is repeating itself to complete some unfinished business.
The change that Ms. Huffington advocates, namely, the people (us) forming a grassroots movement to force our leaders to change, is of course the solution and was what the American revolutionaries did to declare independence from tyrannical British rule. Like anything difficult, it's easier said than done.
Henry Ford said that "people deserve the government they get," and how right he was. It is a fearful and fragmented population to blame when it allows the leaders of this Great Union to commit wholly un-American atrocities in the name of American values.
For those that are interested in change, I wouldn't encourage you to grab a megaphone, start a rally or protest, or anything of the sort. We have plenty of that already, without results. What I would suggest is something out of the box: to start being comfortable with being uncomfortable, to start facing those areas in your life where you are fearful because it is your fear multiplied by everybody else's that has created the perilous power structure alive today.
What do you hide from in your life? What conversation are you avoiding? What do you know you need to change but never do because you're too afraid to do anything about it? What risk do you fear taking? Who do you give your power away to? What are you afraid of? Take 10-15 minutes, sit down, think it through, and make a list. Don't analyze, just start writing and let the process be a cathartic experience. After you finish, review the answers and boil them down to the top three most terrifying actions and then commit to doing them, at a pace that is comfortable for you (maybe saving #1 for last). Even discovering and acknowledging what makes you afraid can be helpful. Small steps like these can cause an avalanche because they are so near the core of the issue.
This really all boils down to your relationship with the present moment and how OK you are with it. Whatever it is that made your list, in some way, will necessitate you entering into the present moment where you have no control and perhaps risk failing, looking stupid, getting rejected, etc.
If we can get comfortable with being uncomfortable, it will be that much easier to have meaningful dialogue with one another, to unite as a people, and to transform the insidious power structure that would have us continue to be afraid, acquiescent, and fragmented.

agreed!
I wouldn't try that stunt in the pic but....
I adopted some healthy self-examination efforts, honest observation and as-is acceptance of life, all at a young age, (even at age 18). It doesn't matter so much what systems, titles or names were used, as many functional systems abound even from ancient times. Common sense was the important guide. Certainly not self fixation nor self-infatuation, but clearly confronting life in present time. Due acknowledgement and self affirmation all around made sense too. Honesty in all things became part of it. Materialism was not dominant, but enjoying some materiality and increasing consciousness, all made good sense, in balance.... Well ok, i probably drank a little too much once or twice, but hardly ever, really ;-)
Keep up the blogs, may encouragement happen.
But then what?
That is a very good idea for personal mental health but by what mechanism does it cause immediate measurable change outside of the personal level? Does it resolve the fact that we as a nation aren't sure where we should get jobs or start the path that will result in a solution?
I'm not trying to say that what you are saying is incorrect, but I am not sure how this would lead to a happy and abundant society right now right now(as opposed to that it may be a step that may lead one to be in a place that may cause positive change)?

interesting
this really got me thinking. what am i really afraid of?
1. poison ivy / painful slow death
2. being cold
3. being hungry
i spend most of my time trying to stay out of these three conditions. as a result, i can't enjoy my natural environment, i'm always freezing my ass off and wasting energy/frustration to stay warm, and i'm rather fat.
how can i stop being afraid of these things, afraid of being uncomfortable? i'm well aware that my zen state of mind is a direct result of my physical comfort. if i was sleeping with a camel spider on a blanket during a dust storm, i might feel differently about my warm and fuzzies.
i can't stop; herein lies the problem. my body will not allow me to, not because they die if i die, but because they lose the work they expended in building this 5'2" skyscraper. my body makes me afraid to die, of being cold, of water-filled blisters covering my skin.
how can i separate myself from their needs, short of suicide? sure i can become a zen meditation master, which controls body (or ego) to some degree. but body will always make me fear what it fears.
the only solution is to get rid of body. not sure where to start to solve this problem. body won't let my mind fight fully until it knows it has nothing to lose. right now, it fears the loss of produce, central heating, and blister-less skin much more than i long for revolution.
there's no way out of this that isn't painful. but i appreciate you making me take the time to ponder these things. any advice?

any advice?
Meg, One small thing might be-- Don't take our woes too seriously. Self deprecating humor helps me a lot! It should quell the emotional burden and clear away absurd channels to solving physical needs. I wonder though if you might benefit with some technical stuff.
1. poison ivy-- We have lots of it here and it is hard to control-- Which makes me wonder if there was more to it than a battle. It is not hard to avoid and i think jewelweed might help. Where my jewel weed prospers, the ivy is not found-- This really depends on your bio-region, consult herb people local to you.
2. being cold-- How about free HVAC? I just put up a blog on this, linking decades of my own research in this area- (check new blogs).
3. Ah, food-- Get on a truly nutritional quest-- The web offers so much these days-- Is abundant information just too much? Concentrating to a point of inconvenience? I have spent my whole life studying nutrition, 'nuff said there. Here is my solution to extending growing seasons, in case one can grow anything--

One does need to ask, what can nourish them, without ruining the planet in the process. Ignorance is no excuse, even regarding the laws or of nature.

"Does it resolve the fact that we as a nation aren't sure where we should get jobs or start the path that will result in a solution?"
Cassius, Starting to search honest confrontations with reality should be a good start-- Employee-dependencies as favored by the powers that be, might in fact be unworkable-- As we might more readily admit with today's observable conditions. As we might observe that independent life styles actually once sustained people who made the required efforts. Why expect dependencies on some sort of big-brother is required?
The fact is, that the dominant war related industries and bureaucratic industries do present natural limitations to consciousness expansion. Technology is thoroughly flexible to priorities of a people. If a people wake up and learn to use more-favorable technologies. If such advancement is realized. Lack of realizing and confronting, face to face, with actual detriments (like scorched earth policies) is really part of our problem. The solution should include massive wake up calls. Methinks.
