Kerouac: A Psychonaut in Denial
Nick Meador

Jack Kerouac's experiments with mescaline, ayahuasca, and psilocybin mushrooms influenced his 1962 novel Big Sur, just as earlier trials with peyote shaped his trademark  "spontaneous prose" style. So why does the public still think he scorned psychedelics?

Doublethink and the Mental Construction of Reality
Nick Meador

The concept of truth-seeking has long been a cornerstone of individualism. But in order to be effective as individuals, we have to make sure that our perception of reality actually contains a significant amount of what we call "truth." So how can we ever be certain that we possess the actual truth? Is human objectivity even possible in reality?

The Not-So-Comfortable Concentration Camp
Nick Meador

Propaganda tactics developed during World War I are now the foundation for our entire addiction-based consumer system. The dehumanizing force we now call "public relations" has been targeting demographic groups since the 1920s, starting with the American housewife.

The Agent of Apathy
Nick Meador

Over the last decade the cultural figure known as the “hipster” has increasingly turned into a target of scorn, despite an apparent disagreement over what the term means and to whom it refers. This semi-mythological character reveals our own compliance with barbaric totalitarianism, a fault we’ve been projecting onto others.

Evolver, I Can't Read You

Recently the text on Evolver changed to a much lighter font (Helvetica Neue, I think) that makes it nearly impossible for me to read blog posts or anything else.

Ideally we'd be given the choice to change the font, alter the text size, or at least make it bold. The font used to be thicker, much easier on the eyes.

Mind-Expanding Music from 2010, part 4: Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus had built up a strong underground following by the time his third album, 2010's Cosmogramma, was ready for release. The title basically means "cosmic drama," and FlyLo (real name Steven Ellison) wanted to convey that idea in the music.

Rethinking Virtual Reality

When I was a kid I thought virtual reality was among the most exciting possibilities that technology had to offer the human race. I remember there was a game show on Nickelodeon in the early '90s where contestants got to enter a video game, and I would have done anything to try it out.

Mind-Expanding Music from 2010, part 3: Teengirl Fantasy

The third entry in my mini-series of mind-expanding music is the band Teengirl Fantasy, another new group from Ohio (go figure). Their indie electronica is a unique amalgam of various styles, including ambient, chill wave, and even some turn-of-the-'90s R&B.

Mind-Expanding Music from 2010, part 2: Emeralds

Welcome to the second edition of my short series about mind-expanding music released in 2010. This entry is about the band Emeralds, a spacey electronic group from Cleveland, Ohio. The video below is for the song "Now You See Me," one of the last tracks on their album Does It Look Like I'm Here?

My Year in Review, 2010

2010 was a crazy year for me, with some of the highest highs and lowest lows that I've ever experienced. I moved out of the country, got published in a real (albeit online) magazine, began writing my first book...and even bottle-fed three foster puppies! By the holidays I was totally worn out.

After working as a web manager for a few years, I'm currently devoting all my energy to writing. I have been a contributing writer for Reality Sandwich since June 2010. I'm working on my first book, tentatively titled All These Serious Faces Will Only Drive You Mad. To help bring the book to life, I'm accepting donations in return for gifts, ranging from project updates to copies of the book (click here to learn more). I created the experimental magazine Supraterranean, where people can self-publish any type of creative work.
