Logical Fallacies, Part I

Recently, I listened to one of my favorite podcasts, Gnostic Media with Jan Irvin. The following is an abridged transcription of this particular podcast (permission was granted by Mr. Irvin personally to post this on my blog). This podcast was an interview with Dr.

Denying My "Need" To Change People

Over the past few years, as I've been delving into a variety of topics that aren't frequently covered in the mainstream, I've made the mistake of coming on too strong with some of my friends. As a result, if anything, I've likely pushed them even further away from having an interest in topics such as spirituality, mysticism, ecology, etc.

A 37th Birthday Stream of Consciousness

It's the 4th day of the new year, which means yet another personal milestone as I've now reached the oh-so-young age of 37, and sitting here, I realized it's been ages since I wrote any sort of blog.

Over the summer and into the fall, I felt my consciousness bursting with ideas that I NEEDED to share, but then suddenly, as the days grew shorter and colder, that need seemed to dry up.

Skimming the Surface: A By-Product of the Information Age (And a Solution)

Recently, I've had several in-person conversations with friends about what seems to be one of the real downfalls of our high-speed, technological age: the short attention span and the lack of diving in deep on a particular topic.

On Pessimism and Denial

Today, I have been labeled something that pushes a button. Yes, a co-worker called me a "pessimist." The why doesn't matter that much, but in brief, it was because I questioned her saying that she had "faith in President Obama" and asked her for some reasons, while explaining my reasons for not having such faith.

Find the Others!

One phrase that's dug itself deep into my craw this summer has been McKenna's "find the others." And tonight, I think I had a new insight about what this means. Well, for me, at least. But no, I'm feeling compelled to share it because I think it might make sense to the "others". So here goes:

What if the "others" are everyone? Okay, here me out, if you would:

Why Do Atheists Insist Atheism Is Not a Belief?

I've spent a fair amount of time discussing spirituality with one particular atheist friend, and it has spurred me into paying attention to how atheists present their perspectives on the various forums around the web. And one theme commonly re-occurs: the idea that atheism is not a belief.

Magical Thinking and Reductionist Thinking

Have you ever thought about how often we hear the words "just" and "only" to describe aspects of reality? Here is an example: "It was just a dream" or "It was only a coincidence."

Why the Winners of Wars Are Often the Losers of Life

Several years back, I was on vacation in the American Southwest and one day, while my friend was back in our hotel recovering from a cold, I went for a hike into the Grand Canyon. It was early October and the weather could not have been more perfect. About 1 hour into the hike, I came to a beautiful lookout spot, so I stopped to enjoy the view.
