This New Year's Eve the real party is online and the centerpiece is Jimmy Wales and Wikipedia. The party? Raise a million bucks before midnight. Just before Christmas, Jimmy did something almost cooler than founding Wikipedia in the first place. He tweeted:
'I am proud to announce that the Wikipedia domain names will move away from GoDaddy. Their position on #sopa is unacceptable to us.'
This is a huge win for anyone remotely interested in freedom, information, access -- and discouraged by the ever increasing militarization, restriction, and bifurcation that the net is quickly becoming.
About three days ago, Jimmy tweeted:
'997,316 donations so far - nearing 1,000,000 individual donations!'
He needs just under a million dollars... TODAY! On Wiki:
This is it. Just hours left.
We’re at the time of year when people all over the world come together to sustain and protect Wikipedia.
If everyone reading this donated $5, we could end the fundraiser right now. Not everyone can or will donate. And that’s fine, because each year just enough people support Wikipedia with a small donation. Please make a tax deductible donation of $5, $20, $50 or whatever you can to help us reach our goal by midnight tonight.
Google might have close to a million servers. Yahoo has something like 13,000 staff. We have 679 servers and 95 staff.
Wikipedia is the #5 site on the web and serves 470 million different people every month – with billions of page views.
Commerce is fine. Advertising is not evil. But it doesn't belong here. Not in Wikipedia. Wikipedia is something special. It is like a library or a public park. It is like a temple for the mind. It is a place we can all go to think, to learn, to share our knowledge with others...'
Considering what Wiki and Jimmy have done for the world already, I'd like to encourage all of you to do the obviously intelligent thing and DONATE TO WIKIPEDIA NOW! RIGHT FRAKING NOW! Donating to Wiki is a statement, a position that says, "This is the world we want." There is no more apropos way to bring in 2012 then by making sure one of our bright, marvelous new beacons on the digital vistas, Wikipedia, remains strong and alight.
Jimmy and Wiki have proved themselves as being the kind of folk I think we all would prefer in the world and in the net. They are observably our allies in evolution.
Much love to all.
PLEASE DONATE NOW!

GoDaddy moves on #sopa?
Made my Wiki donation but will double it if someone will tell me what GoDaddy and #sopa mean? I'm guessing a web host and a bureaucratic rating system?
