Obama, Dharmic Leadership and the Mandate of Heaven

It is absolutely amazing to watch the reaction of the world and more specifically of the citizens of the United States to President Obama and his decisions. In less than a year, he has literally gone from being a savior-like figure to a villain or in some circles the anti-christ. Considering the extraordinary times we are in, how can we possibly know what is really happening? Is he really a decent guy trying to do his best with the biggest mess every handed to a US president? Or is he really a pawn of the New World Order? How can we really tell?

Fortunately, history may have some answers for us. In many traditions, especially those from East Asia and Central Asia, there was a concept of a relationship between leaders and the world around them that revealed to people if their leader was truly serving the people. This concept has lots of names. In China, it was the Mandate of Heaven. In India, it was called Dharmic Leadership. In ancient Europe, it was the Divine Right of Kings. The basic idea was that if a leader was truly serving the people, then the land would be fruitful, the weather benign, time would be peaceful and prosperous.

If the leader or leaders of the people were corrupt or dishonest or brutal, this would literally disturb the forces of heaven. The heavenly forces (however they were conceived in different cultures) would show their displeasure by sending disturbing weather, causing earthquakes, creating famine, pestilence and plague.

In my opinion, during the years of the Bush administration it was pretty clear that heaven was showing some pretty serious displeasure with the leadership being displayed. We had more hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and weird weather than I could ever remember. We also had huge food price spikes due to weird weather and ultimately we had the biggest crash in wealth we have ever seen. Now, I know that all of these events could also be considered to have been caused by other factors (i.e, Global Warming), but that doesn't mean that heaven or heavenly forces weren't also involved.

So, how do we apply this to the current administration? Well, considering they haven't even been in power for a full year yet, it is clear that they are still experience some of the karmic messes of the previous administration. Essentially, if Obama really is a Dharmic Leader trying to lead us in a peaceful way for the benefit of everyone, then Heaven will start to smile on this country. We will have mild weather that produces abundant crops, prosperity will return (but hopefully in a way that is actually more sustainable and local), there will be less turmoil both internationally and domestically. I guess the answer is that time will tell. I imagine after two years, we will really have a sense of whether or not this guy is part of the NWO cooking up genetically modified swine flu, is truly a peacemaker savior, or is simply something more like how he present himself: someone trying to do the right thing under really trying circumstances.

On a side note, I will say that in the Pacific Northwest, we have had record fruit crop numbers and record numbers of returning salmon this year. We've also had one of the driest and warmest summers on record. During the Bush years, we had all sorts of crazy weather including some of the worst flooding and worst winter storms many people had ever seen (We set three different 100-year flood records during the last few years of Bush's presidency, as well as having years where we had both record low temps in the winter and record hight temps in the summer).
I still think it is too early to tell, but there has been a truly bumper crop around here in more ways than one.

It's raining again

Tonight is the night of Lotus Music Festival here in Bloomington. They are jamming downtown from all over the world in their tents! For it is raining here again, during the traditional drought-time. Just saying. I was happy to learn that you caught a Salmon!

i have to agree that many

i have to agree that many peopl epass harsh judgement on Barack
i always say if you dont know someone you cannot even begin to know what you are talking about, the possibility exists that even if he was perfect, his administration would not let him do his will. i like your idea for discerning the truth, wait....and see. its important to be patient

how would the small vegetable feel if while it was trying to grow, the whole time it could hear us downing it.

"that squash aint even gonna grow right, an if it does it will taste like shit!"

we all have the right to grow in righteous light

I've never heard or thought

I've never heard or thought about natural disasters being related to the currents of our politic leaders, interesting theory for sure when you think of Bush. As for me, I believe in Obama. His speech at Congress was a blast to watch. People were getting all riled up! The planet is overpopulated and everyone has an opinion of the man so truth is hard to come by. I believe in Obama because he speaks with power, and power is knowledge. What would Bush have done if someone yelled, "You lie!" in the middle of his speech? Obama finished the speech with the same tone that he started with, his voice never fell weak and that is was feat that very few people could do. The man really does have the wait of the world on his shoulders and he's carrying it well in my opinion. It was funny because after his speech a Republican surgeon came on talking about why his health care plan wouldn't work. The man's voice lacked any confidence and belief in what he was saying and if you looked hard enough, the lights bouncing off his cue cards were reflected in his glasses.

If Obama is false, I'm going to be pissed; but not that pissed, because I didn't vote.

Policies vs. personality

It is tempting to rely on the charasmatic and intelligent personality of Barack, he is truly gifted and very disarming. BUT, one only need examine the policies of his administration to find that they are vitually all continuations and in some important cases (ie., detention of 'unlawful enemy combatants' without charge), expansions of Bush's policies. Keep in mind, most of what is happening would be still be happening regardless of who the president happens to be. There a powers running the world that extend far beyond political personalities.

Its really not an issue of whether Obama is on the side of the people, the institution that he operates within is incapable of protecting both human and corporate interests. Universal health care should be a no brainer, it is widely popular among 'the people' despite what the media may protray, while wars and corporate bailouts are very unpopular but get approval within days as long as 'immanent danger' or threat is declared.

I definitely have to agree

I definitely have to agree that Obama's policies thus far, especially regarding civil liberties have been particularly disheartening compared to his campaign rhetoric. Also, I have also contemplated the fact that Obama may be a decent person trying to do what he thinks is the right thing and be paralyzed by the monstrosity that is the modern federal government.

I have been disappointed in the lack of true transformative vision that could have been brought after the victory last November.

I hope for the best.

Or is he really a pawn of the New World Order? How can we really tell?

media support? check
CFR and corporate interest on cabinet? check
Middle East aggression? check
not to mention the drug war still rages. If anything He is articulate puppet. And definitely not the anti-Christ lol, i mean wouldn't skull and bones man bush be a better candidate for channeling evil spirits. There might be a deeper obama that were not seeing on tv but I don't think he's a show stopper.

Yeah, his actions especially

Yeah, his actions especially legally and on civil liberties have not met how he presents himself. Btw, on the Bush note, does anybody remember how many times Florida and Texas got hit by hurricanes during the Bush year? It was crazy. Florida got hit 4 times in one year by major hurricanes. I always thought this was a little retribution for the voting fiasco in 2000.

I've also wondered if we are in the midst of a bigger shift in American political and power structures that started after 9/11 that really can't be stopped even if there is a completely different person at the top.

It seems as if the craziness and power of the right wing is in some weird way growing even though they just lost the white house and both branches of congress. Isn't that really weird and also scary as hell?
