Bread and Circuses
Renee

My father insists that my dissatisfaction with consumerist and materialist lifestyles renders me an inescapably unhappy person, doomed to a life of politically-correct misery. I, however, take great pleasure from abstaining from the litany of excess and violence of mainstream American culture.

Don't Fight Forces, Use Them! : The Integrity of Tension in Science and Architecture
Renee

What do Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes and the human body have in common? Both speak to the ingenuity of self-assembling structures and their methods of maintaining stability; when you use forces, you don't need to fight them.

Animal Architecture: Buckminster Fuller's Tensegrity
Renee

Buckminster Fuller coined the term "tensegrity" to describe the decentralized tension that enabled him to build his famous geodesic domes. But tensegrity structures are not just archtectural forms, they are found in carbon atoms, water molecules, proteins, viruses, cells, tissues, and animals.

Who Will Police the Police?

Master of horror Alfred Hitchcock is famously quoted as saying, "I'm not against the police - I'm just afraid of them." Indeed, the paradox of the modern police state is that the majority of the public is generally fearful of the very organization which their tax dollars pay to protect them.

sweet repose

i compose in sweet repose

physical grace is not as important as mental or spiritual grace - in fact, there is often an inverse relationship between them. rather than resigning myself to the dichotomy of burning out or fading away, i prefer something in between; to live and end my life organically, and decompose in sweet repose.

If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Cut Off His Head: Jodorowsky and Enlightenment

Last year I read one of the several memoirs of Alejandro Jodorowsky and was deeply inspired by the way he conveyed the nuances and complexity of his spiritual journey. The following passage, which I originally excerpted for Reality Sandwich, particularly resonates with me.

This article is excerpted from The Spiritual Journey of Alejandro Jodorowsky, recenty published by Inner Traditions.

Marcuse and the Threats to Individualism in Modern Society

Revisiting this paper I wrote for a Contemporary Political Theory class at Wesleyan reminds me of the importance of reflecting on and preserving selfhood in these times of mass transition.

Deny Me and Be Doomed: A Flock of Ponders

1. On Writing

Being a great writer has nothing to do with writing. Putting pen to paper - or finger to keyboard, in our technocratic age - is one of the easiest things to do. It's one of the first things that five year olds learn how to do in kindergarten.

About Me

Bio

A high frequency pixie, a heady mix of euphoria and pandemonium. Literally translated, my name means "the reincarnate of the beautiful keeper of the forest." I recently graduated from Wesleyan University with a BA in political theory and spent the past year studying and writing about the potential uses of Web 2.0 technology for improving democratic expression. Now, I work as a writer, editorial assistant, and organizer for Reality Sandwich/Evolver and am honing my ability to harness the power of the written word to inspire others to live more responsibly and gracefully, with an expanded appreciation for our interconnectedness with nature and one another. Language is a titillating medium and words are meant to be played with.

I am also the founder and CEO of The Magic Hookah Lounge, a self-sustaining and ever-evolving creative attitude, which occasionally takes physical form, and manifests into a tangible place to create, experience and share magic in its infinite varieties. In physical reality, it is a mobile hookah lounge and public art space that materializes at outdoor and indoor events and festivals throughout the United States.
