Ancient myth actually allowed for anomalies like Zombies, Vampires, Giants ect... Of course they didn't know it as myth, no because of the fact that ancient people (rural people especially) were unaware of the reality model handed down by The Romans, these apparent fairytales were a part of life, facts. It wasn't till we got organised by religion then science (another particularly stupid religion) that folklore became another word for fiction.

What we refer to as our "culture" can be compared a computer Operating System. Western Consumer Culture (WCC) is hugely popular & gaining market share with each passing year. This OS supports some pretty cool applications like The Ferrari 599 GTO, Boeing 737s and The Nintendo DS. One of the problems with this OS however, is that it's buggy & won't run programs that previous Operating Systems were able to handle.

Magic is a good example, magic worked quite well in the days of The Druids & High Kings but they were running Medieval Ireland 8.6. Try running Magic on OS WCC 2.0 & I can assure you that you'll experience some difficulty. Our current OS doesn't really support it, unless it's magic for television of course, but generally speaking it just won't install. If you do manage to install Magic & you have a problem & you call Tech Support, "ah we don't support it" :-)

Cultures like The Aboriginal Australians, Native Americans & The Ancient Celts are examples of traditions that had a very advanced version of their own Native OS but these people encountered some serious cross platform issues when they foolishly tried to fileshare with earlier versions of WCC. The latest version is gone beyond being buggy & prone to viruses. It's even more hostile than ever to societies not running the approved system. Ask the people of Libya & Afghanistan. It seems the only way you're safe to live your own life in harmony with your local ecosystem is if it's too much trouble to reach your village, like the people deep in the Amazon & The Jungles of Indonesia. Where's it going to end? I haven't got a clue. Oh yeah, giants. :-)
