The fingers on the keyboard are chilly and so it drew me to post a silly comment on the oscillation of the weather now that we are emerging into Spring here in Arawak City. There is enough warmth to walk around and play during the day but enough to chill us back into bed to grab covers. The heater is now officially off and so the hovering of 45+ degrees is enough to keep me vibrating on caffeine to endure it but not going to cry when the warmth of the sun starts to take over.

I've noticed a trend in two Science Fiction stories lately, and that is an abandonment of alienated technology in favor of a return to the earth and cultivation. The end of Wall-E has a bunch of over-weight McDonalds grubbing-esque humans learning how to plant again in a world desolated by waste. And Battlestar Galactica also ended with them abandoning the technology of their spacecrafts completely to become a part of pre-civilizaton based cultivator culture. I think that this perhaps is one of the instances where narratives are previewing and tapping into a trend that will become more ascendant in our upcoming experience on this earth, especially for those of us living in the western world that has been primarily cut-off from the source of our food for the last 50+ years or ever since WWII introduced maximum petroleum nitrate-bomb based fertilzer and the so-called "green revolution" of the 70s. An embracing of organic agriculture and local foods and backyard cultivation can be seen even as far up as the White House. It just might be important for our survival if there is ever a break in our fuel supply, local food will start to make a lot more sense, and there is no better way to enable food security than to participate in the growth of it yourself in your own backyard or in a community garden. So that is my interpretation of the cultural events of the day at least as they play out in the media.

The other thing I have to say is that we are going to also have to embrace and become the local media if we want it to exist, as newspapers tank and TV journalists play out tired monologues in front of the stale events they cover there is a tremendous amount of coverage lacking in terms of civic/political as well as neighborhood based activities, and we need to build a culture of sharing in regards to information in order to maximize our potential output of idea spreading and project cultivation. The gap is forming will we be able to grow to the point of participating in the new media environment ? The cost of entry is significantly less but the price of both attention and focus on quality is just as high as ever so it's only up to us to rise to the occasion. And that ends my blog of the moment, time to disseminate it through out the various virtual spots I maintain a presence on.

I love how a recurring theme for any media outlet- books, magazines, movies, television shows- is the end of the world and rebirth of civilization. TV has never been so complicated- look at Lost! Look at BSG! And the cover of Rolling Stone was about the green revolution! How could all of this postulation and preparation go ignored? In the back of the collective mind, we are ready for this.
It's all waiting to happen...

Gardenning works!

I was happy to hear that the presidents wife will be gardenning while shes at the whitehouse..Its about time ..gees what does it take..
I have to agree with you Robb about how it might be more than just a good thing to be doing .I have been advocating home victory gardens for quite sometime now..its not just about the fantastic food but more about the healing and great mind managment that can take place from such activities..
Happy sailing
