I have been in a deep process over the past few days. It has in fact been one of the most profound experiences of my life. My Facebook page was mysteriously removed from Facebook after 3 and half years without a problem. Yes, you heard right! My whole page was just simply removed. I was given no notice, never received any warning, or an email stating that it would be removed for any reason. I never once was warned about any of my Facebook engagements and I am 100% positive that I have only used the account for high purposes. I have really honestly not broken any rule which could possibly warrant the deletion of my account!
I logged out in the morning around 10AM when I left for my second Yoga class. that day in particular I did not write or use the application at all beyond looking. When I was done teaching at 4PM I tried to see the account from the application on my phone, and it was blank. I tried to sign in and it said that it was the incorrect username and password. I figured that there was some glitch in my application which I know does not work that well on my Android.
I got home and a few hours later I tried to sign in from my laptop. I got the same message: Incorrect Username and Password. I was frantic for a moment, and breathless. I thought, oh no did I somehow forget my password? I tried again and again and it was the very same message. I tried to reset password and then I got the most peculiar message, ‘your account has been disabled, please sign in to continue’ and yet, there was no sign in option. I closed the browser and brought it back trying once again to sign into my beloved Facebook account. And received this message: ‘Your account has been disabled.’ Under the message there is a small link that says ‘please read our rights and responsibilities, if you think this was in error please click here.’ So I clicked.
A whole page of Facebook rules and regulations popped up. A few which I had clearly broken? Facebook encourages using the family name, which I have abandoned. I also change my name whenever I felt like it, which to be honest I knew was kind of wrong but I don’t see the reason why we cannot have the names that we choose. I also do not see this as cause to completely delete me. I would kindly have changed that. I did also see that Facebook is not allowed to be used to promote you as a business in any way whatsoever and if it does perceive that you are promoting your business, or using your personal Facebook for any business at all, it can delete you at will and has NO RESPONSIBILITY to you as a consumer. I might have been promoting myself but was in no way soliciting anyone on Facebook and I have never sent a group message. I am so very confused.
I emailed about 5 Facebook emails on 10 different occasions in 5 days, including their ((appeals)) site explaining that my account was down and in 5 and a half days I have received no response from Facebook. I cannot completely blame Facebook because I suspect that I was hacked, but I truly do not know because Facebook has NO SUPPORT and they will not return my emails to get my account back up and running. Where I have all of my clients, events, groups that I manage etc. these are all just abandoned. All gone and probably won’t be back!
I have taken time to read up on this subject. In fact there are hundreds of groups on Facebook of hundreds of thousands of abused people who have had their reputable accounts deleted without warning and for no good reason and they were NEVER RESTORED! Many are writers and frequent posters and many claim to have been in no violation. Some people suspect that this is Facebooks way of gaining new clients who might need to reregister after being deleted. I can't say that this is true but with the amount of people who are irrate about this I would not doubt that it is truth.
I punch 'disabled facebook' into the search engine and it pops out hundreds of thousands of sites and disgruntled customers who have been shut off without warning and never restored, and never answered by Facebook. In hours of searching the internet for information on how to reach Facebook concerning an issue, I would find that one message that was the silver lining stating ‘oh my account was restored in two days.’ Yeah right! There are so many people that Facebook has chewed up and discarded! Facebook has no regard for us, for our published material, or for us as consumers! At this point Facebook makes me feel almost ill. I have put years and love into Facebook getting my parents and even my elderly clients to join to help stay connected, and they delete me separating me from everything that I have worked for with out any concern for me as a user! And even if they did not cause the deletion, they should certainly be available for support in the case that a valued client has been viciously attacked. Facebook is a corporate and numbers driven entity which really should have infrastructure in place to manage our data if they wish to publish it! All of my information from over 3 years is now gone poof as if I never existed. I would not be so concerned if I didn’t see all of the many people who never did receive their account back. I might, or I might not get an email back concerning my issue. How could I ever trust a company like this with my information again? Will I? If they do reactivate me will I trust them again? Will they even ever respond? I do not know. At this point is it seems unlikely. I am in the meantime using a very small personal face book account while I gather my people back.
As I was reflecting upon why this might have happened it occurred to me that I needed to publish and network with a really respectful media company who understands the value in our writing and community outreach. I think that Facebook is going out of fashion as all things do which are consumer driven improperly engineered things.
I am going to make an effort to blog here on Evolver.net from now on. Evolver may be even safer with its flaws than Facebook is with its whole bureaucracy. I will wait and see if Facebook ever gives me a contact back, or if my 10 emails are ever answered.
One more reason to join Evolver or Reality Sandwich.
I will say more about this in the future as I see if there is progress made.
For anyone who might encounter this problem:
Here are the reasons why Facebook deletes and disables its customers and what to do if you are the victim of this horrid system.
ACCORDING TO THOR MULLER, there are 13 things that (supposedly) will get you kicked off Facebook (thanks, Jean ) :
1. You didn’t use your real name. Facebook will find you and spit you out.
2. You joined too many groups. (The maximum limit is 200 groups per user.)
3. You posted too many messages on a wall or in a group. E.g. Guy Kawasaki had his account disabled–in his case for “excessive evangelism.”
4. You posted in too many groups, too many user’s walls. (That’s what spammers do, silly.)
5. You friended too many people. (Not so long ago this was a prime cause of disabled accounts, but Facebook has instituted a maximum of 5000 friends that should protect you from yourself.)
6. Your school/organization affiliation is doubtful.
7. You’re poking too many people. (Beware the odd FB app that pokes on your behalf.)
8. You advertised your app on wall posts.
9. You used duplicate text in multiple messages.
10. You are a cow, dog, or library.
11. You are under 18 years old and not part of a High School group.
12. You wrote offensive content.
13. You scraped information off Facebook. E.g. Facebook bots disabled Robert Scoble’s account.
ACCORDING TO MARI SMITH, here are more possible reasons your account may be deactivated:
1. You send “too many” friend requests in one day/session.
2. You make “too many” wall posts in one day/session – especially with verbatim content and with links.
3. You copy and paste the same friend request message “too many” times.
4. You send too many identical emails to individual friends and/or friend lists*.
5. You message your Group members “too many” times.
6. You message your Event invitees “too many” times.
.
Recommended action steps:
1. Take your time to build up a strategic network of friends on Facebook. Focus on quality, not quantity.
2. Send no more than approximately 20 new friend requests at any one time. Also, be sure to mix up the friend request messages.
3. Use your own opt-in email system.
4. Build out your Facebook Page.
5. Include Facebook in your overall marketing strategy. Don’t put all your social networking “eggs” in one basket. Build up a following on Twitter, FriendFeed, Plaxo, LinkedIn, etc.
6. Remember there was life before Facebook.
