Saying “I Love You” After Christmas Eve Dinner

I sat between you
and your brothers,
father and mother
on your other side.
Snow began to fall outside the window
as I chewed prime rib and pushed
the potatoes around my plate.
I was warm inside
when you walked me to the door
with your mother’s lipstick
stains on my cheeks.
I mouthed the words I was afraid
to say.

a moment so perfect, it would later seem a cruel joke

to dance on a balcony overlooking
the lights from lenny kravitz live at levsky stadium

to lay in bed together while lenny stopped
singing but kept riffing

to listen to the cry of the guitar
we fell asleep to.

industrial size vodka

the sound of fingers on a chalkboard; metal against metal;
the distortion of a guitar: these became my vices
to drown out the noise of common sense and squat
shop vendors hawking all sizes of spirits, some almost too heavy
to carry, get it in bulk, industrial size vodka
