I have an idea for a new currency that promotes helping others and the earth. I welcome your ideas and critiques, as this is a newly birthed idea and needs reflection to ground it into being. The main idea is that to obtain the new currency, instead of trading dollars for it, you donate to a non-profit. So say I donate $100 to Greenpeace, then I would receive 100 units of this currency. If you would rather trade your time for this currency, if you volunteer with a nonprofit you receive a set rate for an hour's worth of work (e.g., 12 units per hour). And from there on the currency circulates like regular currency with whomever chooses to accept it. Getting businesses to accept the currency would be the real key, but could be quite feasible, especially with organizations like local farmers who could pay volunteer labor in this new currency, and then sell their produce for this currency.
Essentially with this currency I am trying to fix the problem I see with the world, which is that those that are trying to help the world are often limited by their resources. This would give people more power when they donate money, and empower people who give their time to help the world. There's potentially some big holes in the plan, so I'm posting this in the hopes someone might spot them and then I can see if there's a workaround.
I was thinking the currency could be both digital and paper-based, with a good online system and phone apps so that you could trade this currency by linking phones. If the idea is somehow sound then the next step would be figuring out how to make it happen....

I think it will be a mix of currencies, time banking, and so forth that we need to implement. I think starting local is the way to go to promote a town's small local businesses, farmers, independent service providers, and so forth. Like the B-Note (http://www.realitysandwich.com/bnote_green_currency_baltimore).
