"J" grew up in a family consistent of a mother and father. Mom was a nurse and well, dad was too. Money was never an issue for J's family, yet J found himself to be an outcast within his own family. Subjected to repeated psychological examinations, whether he was crazy or not, it became apparent to J, the beliefs of those meant to be his closest allies. He must be crazy... Why else would they send him to doctor after doctor seeking help? J continued to be a typical kid; however, his every action took place under a microscope. Every doubt was labeled a psychotic break, every girlfriend, an example of sexual promiscuity, every longing for love, a predictable symptom of separation anxiety. Mind you, these are his parents. He came into care, has not spoken to his parents since. Not his choosing. He blows placement after placement, stating he only wants to be with his family. Meanwhile, dad calls cops when he tries to make contact, feigns preoccupation with work in the face of parental responsibility, and most sadly, receives the complete and utter support of a state-run system designed to take the place of individuals ultimately seeking the financial security he enjoys. In J's case, his parents have simply cast him aside like an old sofa, covered in dog hair, spilled potato chips and Dr. Pepper. J is in prison. While not surrounded by bars, the cell he inhabits is surrounded by betrayal and insecurities that dig much deeper. Iron bars will cause one's knuckles to bleed; acting upon the betrayal of loved ones tends to send one behind iron bars. Why should the victim go to prison?
The facts of this case disturb me... I'm not a particularly sensitive person; however, I strongly feel the maltreatment of children is utterly wrong and often times overlooked in our society. It's a blemish in modern society's way of dealing with things. Will my daughter dip my Nilla waffers in milk for me when I'm too old to do it for myself? Let's hope so...
