Last night was a career high light for me. I had the great opportunity to discuss EQ settings and cab options with Eden artist Mike Gordon (my bass hero) from the band Phish. It was my 61st show and the 13 yr and a day anniversary to my first Phish show back on 8/10/96 @ Alpine Valley Wi.

Mike started using Eden with Phish on 12/31/02, it was Phish’s come back concert from their first hiatus at MSG in NYC.(What a fun time that show and the 3 Hampton Va. shows following were). His rig then consisted of a WT800A, D410XLT8, YAMAHA 15, and a Meyer 2x18 powered sub. Mike was originally prompted to make the change to Eden by one of his favorite bassists Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead).

Mike became an official Eden artist in 2006 and my first time speaking with him regarding Eden was at a Rhythm Devil’s show at the Chicago Theater. (I had just started for USM at the time as a customer service rep). Fast forward three plus years and I’m doing A&R for Eden and arranged to bring a D210XST8 and a D410XLT8 cab out for Mike to play around with. Mike has been using our WT800 head on this tour and running through two Meyer powered 2x18subs and two powered Meyer 12s. After attending 5 Phish shows earlier this summer I was really missing the 10s (Eden D410xlt8) in Mikes rig (they're just so nice and punchy). Mike agreed to run the D210XST8 combined with the other cabs for the show last night. Since his Meyers are powered it was easy to just plug the cab into a stereo out of his WT800A (he has a WT800C as his back up). After the show he decided to take both cabs with him so he can do further experiments. Mike is really into frequency and his complex EQ settings really show it. He runs an additional parametric EQ (Meyer CP10, the same one Phil Lesh uses) with his rig and the signals are bi amped between his powered cabs. I was a bit alarmed by his Enhance setting being cranked; however his CP10 also affects the over all tone. We started a conversation on the enhance pot and Eden’s recommendation for running it no higher then 10 or 11 o’clock. We went back and forth with its positioning and alas the door opened and we had to put the EQ tweaking on hold. Mike is also looking for a scaled down rig for his club dates with the Mike Gordon Band. Perhaps we will see the Eden cabs on the road with him this fall.

Phish is finishing up their summer tour with 4 more East coast dates followed by a three day Halloween festival called 8 in Indio CA at the Empire Polo Club.
