As part of our efforts to build a strong, inspired, and forward-looking community in Atlanta, our Evolver Regional chapter has begun planning to grow a garden this season. So far, we have met several times to discuss options, such as what/when/where to plant, and how to organize the work schedule.Â
We are still in the discussion stages, but we've already taken concrete steps toward getting started. We recently connected with a representative of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Fred Conrad, whose job it is to help groups like ours get started building a community garden. One frigid morning a few weeks ago, Fred took a group of us on a three-hour tour of model community garden projects in the area, to give us some ideas on how to go about collectively growing some food.
This was a very motivating experience -- and encouraging as well! Fred assured us that we've already overcome the biggest hurdle: organizing a group of gardeners. The actual gardening (which is new territory for all of us) is the easy part, he told us. There's still a lot of planning we need to do before the real work begins, but February is upon us, so there's no time to lose.
I'll continue to update this Project as things develop. If anyone in the Atlanta area is interested in helping out, contact us here or through the Evolver Atlanta page..
Happy Homesteading,
ST

I'm in!
It has been years since I gardened, but I will definitely lend a hand.
I might be able to help with some seed as well. I can get good seeds out of Louisiana.
The only thing I ask is that we check our seeds. I don't want to buy anything from Monsanto and don't want to contribute to the growing of ANYTHING from genetically engineered seeds they produce.
If you wonder why I just said that, I strongly suggest you watch this video. It is a long one, but if you are serious about the garden, it is a must watch.
