Oh-Phiuchus! Can’t Astrologers and Astronomers get along?

The emails came in immediately. “What, I’m no longer a Sadge?,” one friend inquired. My facebook wall lit up with cries for help ranging from the slightly perplexed “what's up with the new zodiac sign dates” to the borderline despairing “Sven, can you help make sense of this new zodiac calendar? I'm hearing so many different things about how it may only apply to people born after a certain year, etc., I'm confused.” As I hunkered down in front of my computer after a nice afternoon on planet Earth, it hit me like a brick: the world as we know it had come to an end.

Dreaming the World into Being

I recently interviewed author, visionary teacher and healer Sandra Ingerman about how to tackle the difficult yet enormously important challenge of integrating the spiritual issues of our time with the ecological crises we’re facing.

So you wanna talk about Hitler…

This is a piece I wrote that got a lot of attention on the front page of daily kos, regarding the comparisons of President Obama with Hitler that have been cropping up in the mainstream media lately.

Global Warming: A Path Beyond Denial and Despair

One of the most poignant lines I remember from An Inconvenient Truth was Al Gore's concern that in light of the problem's magnitude there was a danger that people might go straight from denial to despair.

Pigs in Oakland...?

A good friend of mine who is a backyard beekeeper in Oakland invited me a couple of weeks ago to meet his fellow urban farmer Novella Carpenter for a reading of her new book, Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer.

There's a lot of buzz these days regarding December 21, 2012, the mysterious and mythical date in the Mayan calendar on which either a great shift is supposed to happen or the world is going to end, depending on who is explaining.

About Me

Bio

My name is Sven, and as it works out in the grander scheme of synchronicity, that rhymes with Zen. I was born and spent the first half of my life in the firmly rooted stomping grounds of Germany, and since have been frolicking in the more sublime playing grounds of San Francisco. I march to the driving beat of the political, and sojourn in the boundless grace of the spiritual. I feel at home on earth, and at ease with the sky. Stick my hands in the soil and raise my glass to the soul. I’m interested in everything and yearn for nothing. Tread lightly but live large. Find magic in the mundane, and music in each membrane.
