The least we can do for the people in Iran struggling for what a lot take for granted in this country is be informed about what is going on there. If we know what is really happening in Iran it will be more difficult for our government to take advantage of our ignorance when it comes time to make foreign policy.
All we have heard about Iran has been in the realm of the people there wanted to eat our young after they were roasted on a nuclear bbq.
How much of the Bush administration’s incessant hate speak actually held the people of Iran back from this movement. Why would they move for a more moderate government if American policy had no room for a new Iran? I ask myself how much the Bush administration knew about how much discontent there was in Iran.
I know that our government is corrupt but I feel betrayed. I realize the Middle East has major problems when it comes to America’s national security, but being so close to a majority opinion to use major force when it comes to the state of Iran only knowing what they tell us. Makes me feel like our government has its own agenda in mind when it comes to the well being of this country. Being told that there is no other way to resolve our issues with Iran, then seeing what is going on there makes me embarrassed to be an American.
Another point I want to make is seeing the people raise up against the hard line government in Iran will this change the way America thinks about its foreign policy. Given the revisions given to the war in Iraq in particular the last one being ‘The liberation of Iraq for democracy’ we invaded that country to do the same thing that is going on in Iran. Will the people of this country remember what the people in Iran are dying for or will they be swayed to go military so we feel like they are under our thumb? I hope the blood that is being spilled in Iran is not in vain. Even if the hard line government maintains power we can not deny that there is a major part of the people there that want a different life. It would be an injustice if we allow ourselves to be told that there is only hate for America. Remember the right wing of this country up until the moment of the elections were saying that the Obama speech in Cairo had no effect. I know that Obama’s speech is not the only component in the uprising in Iran and may be only have a small part but doesn’t it say something that after a gesture of words given with some level of sincerity we see a major shift in that region of the world..?
Maybe we should be nurturing the moderate movements without trying to impose our C.I.A and politics since we know how that ends up. I think the only hope for world peace is to be the example we like to pretend to be in the world. Let us give them a reason to strive for individual liberties and stop trying to strong arm our ways into countries so we feel safer here. Peoples around the world in countries that are ruled by extremist rules are wanting a more moderate life, they have children and loved ones they don’t want to see go off to fight a war that is being fought for things they don’t agree with just as us. When we impose our will in a country like Iran it becomes the imperial west trying to put our footprint on them. If we lead by example and not try and place a propped up leader who is seen as an American puppet in their country maybe democracy will take a real foothold in these countries and have the staying power to make us all safer..

dude, its crazy huh, its like the people have risen and will not be suppressed back into silence without massive death.
I wish the US helped people instead of worked for private mega corporate interests...its crazy how the USA will do the bitch work for multinationals but can't help a peoples fighting for democracy.
I somewhat agree with your
I somewhat agree with your sentiments. I think the U.S. needs to be more aligned with the betterment of all PEOPLE of the world, not just nations that can help our political agenda is some way. A major roadblock I can see with progress in Iran is the fact that there can be no true Democracy with clerics having the final say over government policy. This fact makes it an interesting dilemma, how long can we 'sit on our hands' on this issue. It's a volatile situation in a volatile country during a very volatile point in existence....
True Democracy
Hopefully the people of Iran can find true democracy. In Europe & North America our so called democracies are really centrally controlled dictatorships. These are known as "Representative Democracies" In a true democracy there is no elected leader, each individual acts with honour & grace, peace & love to help the community achieve a happy & plentiful state. There is no scarcity on this planet. The ruling class constantly push the population to consume, purchase & destroy their enviornment as this ruling class thrives on that system. Power to the people!
Peace,
Richard
