Start saying ADAPTATION instead of EVOLUTION

Evolution is the idea which theorizes and summarizes the progression of organisms within this cosmos. the theory would then imply that consciousness is an evolved trait within organisms for no reason other than survival of the physical manifestations of that being.

My idea, is that beings ADAPT around what their conscious needs for survival/progression and that through time adaptation can either progress or digress that being. it doesn't necessarily constitute that "suvival of the fittest" is what happens, an in the long run all odds point to survival of the fittest becoming survival of the most intelligent.

If consciousness were spawned through evolution, everything is predetermined in math and nothing you do is sentient.
If it is as i have come to understand, and the universe is pure ever-present infinite consciousness...the physical manifestations of the fractal that is our universe are just puppets for the different levels of the infinite to ...basically express itself through example.

Evolution is just too controversial a word in todays understanding.. i call for the rEvolution to know it in other terms, or at least broaden other peoples understandings about topics that most consider themselves pretty learned on.

What species survive in the

What species survive in the long run might not necessarily be determined by intelligence. Maybe blind luck has a lot to do with it, too. And the ability to adapt.

Some people argue that adaptation is conscious, some argue that it's involuntary, like a reflex. The truth is, it could be both. It could be even more. There could be many, many explanations for how adaptation happens.

What is adaptation? Adjusting to the circumstances? Is that conscious or unconscious? Can it be both?

If we argue that adaptation is consciously determined, then we have all the reason in the world to call it "survival of the fittest." After all, we're the ones surviving, and you don't hear a whole lot of other species arguing. We consciously determine how to adapt as we see fit -- therefore we have a right to all the credit for Progress, because all credit is due. Right?

On the other hand, if we argue that adaptation is involuntarily determined, then we recognize that the way we adapt can be completely beyond our control.

I mean, I don't think we woke up one day and decided it would be a lot more convenient to walk on two legs. Although that would have been cool =) And I like that the site is called "Evolver," because I think it's meant in terms of opening up consciousness, and adapting to new ideas, outside the norm. I don't know if people would be as open to a website called "Adapter." Although that would also be cool =)

But you're totally right, the meaning behind the words need more dialogue because they have conflicting definitions. We should beat it to death until we figure it out, because I don't think we're completely on the same page yet. I know I'm not =) And another important aspect of adapting (or evolving), consciously speaking, is being receptive so changes are possible. Thanks for the blog, nicely done

the progression of a species

the progression of a species body is the work of intelligent design. Fractal mathematics define how our bodies grow and work and in all eventuality, the humanoid design would have been produced, the same goes for literally everything. anything ontop of this original design is based on variations of conscious interaction/progression.
call it what you want, conscious and natural means are both here for progression as sentient beings

Evolution or Adaptation

Good points. We do need to be on the same page, or at least in the same book. =-)

One helpful viewpoint is to get outside ourselves and see how the larger systems do their thing.

Definitions are good. This is from an interview with Jeremy Narby.
http://deoxy.org/narbystew.htm

"Intelligence comes from the Latin inter-legere, to choose between. There seems to be a capacity to make choices operating inside each cell in our body, down to the level of individual proteins and enzymes. ...Some enzymes edit the RNA transcript of the DNA text and add new letters to it; any error made during this editing can be fatal to the entire organism; so these enzymes are consistently making the right choices... Cells send one another signals, in the form of proteins and molecules. These signals mean: divide, or don't divide, move, or don't move, kill yourself, or stay alive. Any one cell is listening to hundreds of signals at the same time, and has to integrate them and decide what to do. "

Making choices and remembering how they work out is learning. Learning what? How to adapt. These cells make choices that directly affect the ability of the organism to survive. In the study of adaptive complex systems, this is called goal oriented behavior. The goal is to fit in, to adapt, to evolve along with changes in the environment.

Looking at it this way, intelligence, operational at the DNA/cellular level, is the cause of evolution, not the result.

The neodarwinian theory of evolution is misses on two related points. This idea of anything happening at random and that evolution follows a linear pattern. What we once thought were random events turn out to be closely controlled by fractal relationships. What once looked like a linear tree of life, now looks like a field full of bushes. Rather than random mutation of individual bits of DNA, it appears the horizontal transfer of long chains of viable code is the cause of adaptation. In order to transfer long strings of code, something has to be able to understand the code.

So, we are all learning to adapt and evolving. Part of our evolution is certainly our consciousness, but we are learning to use consciousness, which is already highly evolved.

Great descriptions

Great descriptions insomniac, you summed it up very well.

adaptation through evolution

I think adaptation occurs through culture and intelligence (learning to eat new foods, stay warm, cross seas) and evolution (walking on two legs, opposable thumbs, the ability for complex language.).

Evolution is the "blind watchmaker" that seems intelligent because of its achievements but is a process occurring over vast amounts of time. Though the process itself might be "intelligent" in that evolution is itself something that has evolved into something complex - e.g. the ways of turning bits of DNA on and off, and sexual selection.

Links

Thanks for the links. Both of these are working toward some positive changes. I applaud their efforts, for sure. Just like this site, their focus does bring up some important issues. Shifting the focus from making money and seeking status, to making love and seeking knowledge, is surely a step in the right direction. If we are really going to adapt, we have to focus our attention on the system that sustains us. The pathway of love and knowledge definitely leads to that place.
